Our Uncompromising Commitment
Safeguarding
Keeping children safe is the reason Hear Their Roar exists. It shapes how we work, who we work with, and how we share children’s stories and images.
Hear Their Roar operates under a strict, board-approved safeguarding policy. A link to download the full Safeguarding Policy document will be added here prior to public launch.
1. Our Safeguarding Principle
Hear Their Roar believes that every child and young person, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, or disability, has an absolute right to be protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
We are firmly committed to upholding Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC): “Children have the right to be protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and bad treatment by their parents or anyone else who looks after them.”
2. How We Put Safeguarding into Practice
Our commitment to child protection is embedded across every aspect of our work in the UK and in Kenya:
- Zero Tolerance: We maintain a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of abuse, neglect, corporal punishment, or physical and emotional harm.
- Vetting and Training: All staff, volunteers, trainers, and trustees undergo robust vetting procedures, enhanced criminal record checks (DBS or local equivalents), and mandatory safeguarding training.
- Safe Partnerships: We only partner with local schools, care institutions, and community bodies that agree to adhere to strict child protection guidelines and non-violent codes of conduct.
- Direct De-escalation (NVR): Our Non-Violent Resistance programmes give educators and caregivers the tools to de-escalate difficult situations safely, replacing physical punishment with calm, non-harming connection.
3. Responsible Storytelling & Photo Consent
Respecting the dignity, privacy, and safety of the children and young people we work with is paramount:
- Full Consent: Photos and stories are only shared with the informed, verifiable consent of children and their legal guardians.
- Protection of Identity: We never publish a child’s full surname, specific school location, residential address, or identifiable personal markers on our website or public materials.
- Dignity First: We refuse to use exploitative imagery. Our photos celebrate agency, joy, resilience, and genuine learning.
